Lets talk communication

August 25, 2010

Todays guest post is from LCW over at Waking Up Williams. She is a green Mamma, has some awesome recipes and her husband is hilarious. Check her out! There a little something I'd like to talk about, it's called communication. But specifically communication between a mother and father and/or husband wife. How many times have you assumed the other person knew what you were talking about or thinking? Yeah, countless. And how many times was the assumption right? Yeah. Probably zero. In our home, you have to ask for exactly what you want or need, or it ain't happening. Read more by Tie a Little Ribbon...

Who are you? What makes you — you?

August 25, 2010

Are we sums of the parts of our lives? Are we the jobs we take on to earn a living? Are we our children? I love to think that i can fix myself by making my child better, and I wish that was true and I know my last post touched on lifestyle and money and really that’s not what this is about either. It’s really about what defines us. For a better part of my life I’ve wanted to give back; work for NGOs, nonprofits, find a balance of peace inside my brain that has been programmed to always think money. Everything I’ve learned since I was a child was to push myself for success. Read the rest by DaDa Rocks!...

Making Time for Us

August 25, 2010

Nolie here guest posting for you all today since Cass decided she needed a vacation. Really she just wanted to spend more time with her MIL instead of us. Usually Cass introduces you to the guest poster, links to their site and says something only slightly amusing about the person. However I guess I am not worthy of her snarky comments because I sit here in her dashboard posting all on my own. So in the famous words of Cass “Make sure you show me some comment love and check out my blog Nolie’s Place.” Read the rest at BigMamaCass...

The Key To Twitter Success by Guest Blogger @2morrowKnight

August 25, 2010

For some time, people have shared their thoughts on what it takes to build a great reputation on Twitter and thrive on the site. For me, only one thing has worked: how I engage people. As J.D. Andrews once said, “Twitter is not just about posting, it’s about participation.” This is true. It’s all about engagement. If you see that some one is from a particular city, recommend some tweeps that person can get to know. If you see someone trying to improve their tweeting experience, recommend some great twitter apps and tools. Read the rest at Rachel in the OC...

Your Friends’ Mistakes Are Yours To Learn From

August 25, 2010

Like for many of my posts my deep thoughts come from simple things. I think learning from other peoples’ experiences is really wise. I believe we are exposed to things in our own lives and in our friends’ lives for a reason. It helps us learn about ourselves and grow. Especially fulfilling is when you see an almost immediate result to your “learning”. The other day I happened to be on Facebook. Read the rest at New Day New Lesson...

Learn From Those Who Have Done It Already

August 18, 2010

My nephew is getting married today to a fantastic girl who I am glad to be able to call my niece. I thought that one of the best gifts I could give them would be some insight into what others think of marriage. After all, smart people learn from people who have already been in their situation. Sure everyone is different but hearing other peoples’ perspectives can give you an added point of view. So I have written about lessons I have learned from marriage and I asked other bloggers what the best thing and the hardest thing is about marriage or long term relationships. If she wasn't so cute...

August 18, 2010

I feel like I need a vacation from my vacation. My sweet, fun, easy going baby is GONE. As in nowhere to be found. Lost. Peace out Mommy. I know I have blogged about this, but its HARD. She is bored with all of her usual toys and games and whines at every thing. Bored with your toy? Whine. Hungry? Whine some more. Mommy on the other side of the room? Whine louder. Getting the kids back to school, are you doing backflips?!

August 18, 2010

I don’t have a child who is now being prepped to go back to school – cramming that summer reading list (by feeding the cliffnotes editions – here’s a tip save the cash and read the Wikipedia entry :P ) but I am starting to prep for the end of summer, which is a pro and a con. Do You Have a Guy?

August 18, 2010

There is no better time to realize the importance of “having a guy” than when you need something done.  If you have some electrical work that needs to be done in your house, most people would rather use a personal reference than gambling on an unknown company you found on the internet or phone book.  In business, “having a guy” is commonly referred to as having a network. For instance, if you are unemployed, you have a higher likelihood of getting a good job through networking that you do by simply filling out an application and hoping for a call back. Even If It Is True Altruism, You Gain Something

August 11, 2010

The concept of altruism and whether it really actually exists is a question I have been wrestling with for a while. I think that the first doubts and questions I had as to whether there really is true altruism began as an early teen. I had the misfortune of attending an activity in a youth group I regularly attended. Read the rest at New Day New Lesson...

Passion, the Missing Ingredient?

August 11, 2010

If someone were to ask you what you’re passionate about, would your answer include your job or career? My guess is that for many, the answer would be an emphatic no! Is it even possible then to find passion in a job that is not necessarily your dream job?  The topic of passion or lack thereof in the workplace came to me on Saturday night as I was sitting amongst thousands of fans in an Amphitheatre, enjoying my own passion in life.  For me, it comes in the form of the rock band Rush.  There is so much joy in being surrounded by a group of people who share the same passion. When You Forget Something, Just Let Go

August 6, 2010

You know how it is when you forget something. Like when you have a really great idea for a blog post and then you sit down to write it, or you take out a pen to jot down the idea and suddenly your mind is blank. What was I saying? Oh yeah. When you forget something, the harder you try to remember, the more elusive the thought. Read the rest at New Day New Lesson...

Table foods for babies/toddlers

August 4, 2010

Once Marley started showing the obvious signs that she only wanted to feed herself I started giving her more table foods in the form of Baby Led Weaning. Basically it allows you to give babies larger, solid chunks of prepared food and engages the baby to explore tastes and textured. I started out with soft and easy things like waffles, toast, fruit, noodles, pancakes, steamed veggies, scrambled eggs etc. I would cut them up into manageable sized chunks and put them on her highchair tray. Encourage Kids To Have Active & Imaginative Playtime

August 4, 2010

This is probably one of those titles that make you slap your forehead and says “Duh, of course. Why wouldn’t we?” But sadly judging from the way kids are now more exposed to TV, hand held games and computers, active and imaginative playtime is not always a given. My older kids who used to spend hours creating with Lego and blocks or just coloring would rather, given the choice, veg out in front of the TV or play games on the computer. Back in the kitchen!

August 3, 2010

A sure sign I’m starting to feel much better: I have actually been cooking again! Last night I made Boeuf Bourguignon for dinner. It was the first time I’ve ever made it and the first time I’ve ever eaten it. It was amazing!! I invited my dad over, too, because my mom is out of town. I, as usual, forgot to take pictures of it. I get too distracted by eating it. I will be posting the recipe for it soon. It’s fairly easy, just time-consuming. Read the rest at Happy.Healthy.Homemade...

The Kindness Club: Week 17 Prompt

August 3, 2010

It’s week 17 of the Kindness Club. Thanks to all of you who have been reading and joining in on the weekly kindness prompts even if you are not posting or commenting. Last week’s Kindness Club prompt was to be on time. When you are on time you are communicating to the person you are meeting that you value their time and respect them. In rare circumstances there are legitimate excuses for being late, but most of the time it is just a lack of planning or not realizing what it means to be late. Treasures

August 3, 2010

Eleven years ago tonight, I entered the hospital. I was miserable. I was pregnant. A smartass male nurse, the type with the witty repartee you see on TV but so rarely encounter in real life, sauntered in around midnight, began my evil Pitocin drip and handed me a very pretty little Haldol capsule. Jose said enjoy, chica. This will be the last night of full sleep you will have for eighteen years. Brother was not kidding. And yet…Read the rest at Rachel in the OC...

The More You Have “To Lose” The More You Fear

July 28, 2010

Once upon a time I used to be fearless. (Or almost fearless.) I knew that nothing could happen to me. Sometimes, when I hear my teenagers speaking I have flashbacks to those times. Times when I was invulnerable. Times like the ones when I would ride the subways of Manhattan at midnight without giving it a second thought except for the no nonsense posture and the mean face I assumed. (Yes Mom and Dad, I was on subways at all hours of the night but you probably knew that.) Read the rest at New Day New Lesson...

Miscommunication, More Than Just a Sixteen Letter Word

July 26, 2010

One of the challenges that all businesses seem to have to some degree, is miscommunication. As businesses grow and become more complex the need for employees and departments to communicate amongst themselves is more critical.  Bigger problems seem to grab our attention first therefore increasing the age old problem of miscommunication.  Sometimes in order for a company to go forward they need to step back and focus on the basics, such as communication. If you think this is confined to certain industries, you would be mistaken. Read the rest by Dennis Schneider...

Good Fences Are A Place Where Neighbors Meet

July 26, 2010

I am lucky. Like I have written before I am blessed because I live in a close-knit community. I guess it makes sense that in any community I have lived in, I have gotten to know a good amount of my neighbors. Why? Because I am the kind of person who gets into discussions with total strangers in malls, in parking lots, supermarkets….So neighbors are definitely people I would have a hard time not talking to. It really isn’t hard to be a good neighbor. Read the rest at New Day New Lesson...

Help donate school supplies to classrooms with Elmer’s Virtual Bag It Forward!

July 26, 2010

For me, doing the back to school shopping just started last year and I can tell that it will become more and more of a larger chore as my girls get older. I have to say though that though I am sometimes amazed at the number of supplies that one can find, Walmart makes it easy and their prices are great! Being a member of Collective Bias I was excited to find that they were working with Elmer’s to help Adopt-A-Classroom make a difference in classrooms across the country by donating up to $10,000 in school supplies! A lifesaver without the hole…

July 21, 2010

As soon as the words “diaper change” come out of my mouth, a flurry of “No! No! No!” is left hanging in the room as my son scurries off to the farthest corner of the apartment he can find. This is followed by what, to the outsider or uninitiated (a.k.a. non-parent), may seem like an idyllic scene of father chasing around his son who shrieks with delight at the game. The Email Barrier

July 21, 2010

There is a daily battle that goes on in most people’s email inbox. This battle has to do with trying to keep your inbox current while at the same time responding to and completing tasks associated with emails received. Email can be used effectively to communicate quickly and to a large number of people or groups. At the same time however, it can be a barrier for those trying to communicate to someone who they have never spoken to or communicated with. The email barrier is what you must break through if you hope to get a reply. Read the rest by Dennis Schneider...

3 days post-op/ why I won’t shut up

July 19, 2010

It’s been three days since the surgery. No video today, as you already know what I look like in my jogging suit and no makeup.. haha! I am still doing fabulous. The pain is very manageable, I’m down to only taking half a Percocet every three to four hours, and taking a couple Advil in between. Also, only half a Percocet doesn’t give me the reactions that a whole one does, it seems- I haven’t had to take a Zofran at all today. Read the rest at Happy.Healthy.Homemade...

URINE for a big surprise!

July 14, 2010

I cried "happy" tears again today (I know, sappy, blubbering idiot, get a grip!).... My son, SOS had to resubmit a urine specimen (TMI?). (Yeah, probably not a good idea to tell him about this post) It appears that it is common for a child/teen, particularly an active child to have hints of calcium in the specimen if taken in the afternoon, which, incidentally, is when his physical occurred (Score one for great planning Doc). The garden and yard

July 14, 2010

Despite my best efforts at ignoring it, my garden finally decided to take off. Since everything else was starting to grow, we went out and got a couple more tomato plants and planted them too, because what’s a garden without tomatoes? The issue is, the weeds have also taken off. They’re out of control! I should weed it more often, and better but it would seriously take hours. The garden space is huge and it’s just COVERED in weeds. It’s really bad. Read the rest at Happy.Healthy.Homemade...

Is Being Too Busy Just a Good Excuse?

July 12, 2010

Some of these tasks often present themselves as “fires” that “have to be done right now.” Read the rest by Dennis Schneider...
